This years Grand Award Winner, the Kumuhau Subdivision, is a durable, low-energy housing project in Waimanalo, Hawaii, that not only exhibits functional use of natural surroundings, but water and energy-efficiency as well.

We used all CFL light bulbs, dual-flush toilets, low VOC finishes and Green Label carpet. These were all little things that add up. We aimed at LEED silver but in the end well achieve LEED gold, says builder, James Keller.

The judges also applauded the reflective planning in the design layout. This project was so well thought out before being builtits a place to live a complete life, a true, naturally passive house that takes advantage of the local climate.
