Thomas Construction Comes to the Rescue of a Roofing Disaster

Bridgeton, MO (Vocus) November 4, 2010

In 2009, Ashley Patterson hired an independent contractor to replace the roof on her Collinsville home, paying $ 5,000 upfront. A year later, the Collinsville Police Department issued Patterson two citations for ordinance violations related to the condition of her nearly brand new roof.

As a single mother of three children, ages 5, 4, and 3 months, Patterson didnt have the money to be picky about the appearance of her house, but never dreamed she would have to replace her roof again this soon. Not to mention, with what money? Doing the job correctly would actually cost twice what she paid before.

Sgt. Bill Berger of the Collinsville Police Department was concerned about Pattersons dilemma, but didnt know how to help. That is, until he came into contact with Doug Miles, Sales Manager at Thomas Construction located in Bridgeton, MO.

Thomas Construction has a history of providing free construction work to residents who are truly in need, and Ashley Patterson was no exception. According to Miles, Thomas Construction does a few of these jobs every so often. Miles continues, these jobs are a way to give back to the community. After driving to Collinsville, MO and looking at the property himself, Miles went to the President of Thomas Construction, Steve Townzen. Townzen agreed that his company would replace Pattersons roof at no cost.

And so, Thomas Construction immediately began building Patterson a new roof. Patterson was enthusiastic to find out about Thomas Constructions donation of time and money. She says, It really touches my heart, because they didnt have to do this. The roof they are building her would normally cost about $ 11,000, and is estimated to last about 30 years. Thomas Constructions suppliers donated the materials, and the company sent four men to handle the job, all of which feel fortunate they were a part of the experience.

Members of The Inaugural Birmingham-Jefferson Food Policy Council Meet at United Way

(PRWEB) January 13, 2012

Greater Birmingham Community Food Partners, a member of the Health Action Partnership, has announced the members of the inaugural Birmingham-Jefferson Food Policy Council. The group met for the first time Thursday, Jan. 12 at United Way of Central Alabama.

Renowned food policy pioneer Mark Winne led the retreat. Winne helped start the first food policy council in Knoxville, Tenn., in 1981. He will help the council determine its leadership structure and set priorities for 2012.

“The food policy council becomes kind of like a table,” Winne told The Birmingham News in September. “Bring our ideas bring our food, so to speak and come up with a plan to have the food system work as optimally as possible for everybody.”

Twenty-one community leaders have been selected for the new council, tasked with improving Jefferson Countys overall food system. According to a 2010 study conducted by Main Street Birmingham, nearly 90,000 Birminghamians live too far from mainstream grocery stores and therefore lack access to fresh, healthful foods such as fruits and vegetables.

“The bottom line is that our food system affects us in more ways than we realize, and this council is a huge step toward correcting many of the inefficiencies and inequalities in the current framework,” says Suzette Harris with the Jefferson County Department of Health. “A lot of people simply eat unhealthy because that’s their only real option, and that’s not sustainable for a healthy community.” Harris oversees county-wide obesity initiatives for the Jefferson County Health Action Partnership.

Those interested in serving on the council in the future may serve on a working group in the meantime to familiarize themselves its goals and its members. To learn more about the Birmingham-Jefferson Food Policy Council, including working groups, call Food Policy Council Coordinator Jennifer Ropa at 205-229-7871.

Jefferson County Health Action Partnership is a coalition of more than 100 nonprofit organizations working alongside the Jefferson County Department of Health to encourage physical activity, reduce obesity, expand food access, advance smoke-free policies, reduce tobacco use and improve the overall health of Jefferson County residents. http://www.championsforhealth.org.

Birmingham-Jefferson Food Policy Council members are: Monica Baskin (UAB School of Public Health), Virginia Bear (Alabama Beverage Association), Hana Burwinkle (Jefferson County Department of Land Planning & Development Services), Craig Corwin (Jefferson County Department of Health), David Fleming (Operation New Birmingham), Burgin Fowlkes (Jefferson County Department of Health), James Gibbs (City of Birmingham), Keecha Harris (KHA, Inc.), Maureen Holt (Little Savannah), Aimee Johnson (American Diabetes Association), Natalie Kianoff (Childrens Policy Council of Jefferson County), John Obert, Jr. (J3 Organics), Mark Rubino (Staysail Group, LLC), Ama Shambulia (West End Community Garden), Scott Silver (Jones Valley Urban Farm), Ellie Taylor (Alabama Grocers Association), Spencer Taylor (Birmingham City Schools), Patricia Terry (Samford University), Paulette VanMatre (Magic City Harvest), Chris Vizzina (Campus Dining), Kristie Waters (Adams Produce Companies).

EthoSource Makes Upcycled Office Furniture Look Good to Womenkind

(PRWEB) January 11, 2012

Womenkind is a New York marketing firm that specializes in marketing to women. Their discovery process focuses on understanding exactly what their clients targeted demographic wants and will respond to. EthoSource takes a similar approach, getting to know their customers preferences and work environment in order to make certain that both their needs and wants are met. We do brand strategy, explained Kristi Faulkner, President of Womenkind, and that means really understanding our clients visions and goals and helping them get clarity if they havent yet. I think thats exactly what EthoSource did.

EthoSource visited Womenkinds new space before it had even been built, working with Womenkind to identify exactly the right fabrics and fixtures. They gave us ideas on everything, said Faulkner. They showed us how to make the space functional.

Womenkind was concerned about function, but aesthetics were also a high priority. A New York City marketing firm has to be conscious of image, and Womenkind is a high style firm. Creativity and good looks are always important to them, and they care about the details.

At the same time, they had a small space to work with and they liked the idea of using pre-owned office furniture. Womenkind was considering the idea of pre-owned furniture, but they werent ready to compromise on style.

EthoSource account executive Lisa Frizol shared photos of previous EthoSource installations to show Womenkind that a sleek look could be accomplished with used office furniture. Womenkind decided to go with EthoSource and their all-encompassing Office Furniture Management services.

EthoSource specializes in the refurbishment of Herman Miller Ethospace cubicles. Ethospace has the versatility to work well in all types of office environments and lends itself to be fully customized to the customers needs. Through its versatility, EthoSources designers were able to configure the cubicles in a way that maximized the work space and functioned according to Womenkinds needs.

EthoSources refurbished cubicles used chocolate brown laminate work surfaces with extra white trim to produce a professional, high tech look with flair. EthoSource also provided customized, extra white, bookcases for the private offices. The new cubicles and bookcases suited the hardwood floors and glass of Womenkinds Broadway offices as well as the tastes of Womenkinds creative team.

I dont feel like we compromised on anything, said Faulkner. Its really good value for a small, growing company like ours. Saving money on our furniture allowed us to invest in other areas.

Womenkind also liked being able to recycle by using EthoSources refurbished workspaces. I loved the idea of recycling, said Faulkner, and they had beautiful products. We got a good value and did something good for the planet.

Aquatherm Industries Solar Pool Heaters Introduces Eagle Claw Series Mounting Hardware

Lakewood, NJ (PRWEB) December 28, 2011

The largest U.S. manufacturer of solar heating systems for swimming pools is proud to introduce its new, patent-pending mounting installation hardware, dubbed The Eagle Claw Mounting System. Already known as the most trusted name in solar pool heating, Aquatherm Industries continues its 35-year history of quality and excellence through innovation with the Eagle Claw hardware.

Three decades ago Aquatherm differentiated itself from competitors by opting to include heavy-duty marine-grade stainless-steel mounting hardware with its systems, rather than using cheaper plastic components like other manufacturers. Built to last a lifetime, the manufacturer’s stainless steel brackets and polypropylene-coated strap are designed to resist corrosion and ensure years of worry-free performance.

In the home, competitive salesmen sometimes claim their plastic hardware is designed to cover the mounting screw and sealant, says Aquatherm Sales & Marketing Manager, Molly Friar. Even though the perception is far from reality, it is our role as the manufacturer to help our Dealers overcome any objections they might face during a potential sale.

But, major advances in polymer technology over the past 35 years have led to what Aquatherm believes is the best of both worlds in stainless and polymer solar pool heater installation hardware.

As part of the Eagle Claw Series of mounting brackets and clamps, Aquatherm is introducing a brand-new, patent-pending Snap-Cover. These polypropylene covers combine the strength of stainless steel mounting hardware with the aesthetic appeal of blacked-out hardware, and provide for the protection of sealant from weather and sun when snapped shut.

The new Snap-Covers integrate directly with Aquatherms current stainless-steel and aluminum outlet header brackets (part #10008 and #11017, respectively), as well as the standard strap bracket (part #50006), and will be available through any Aquatherm Regional Distribution Center in early 2012.
